In a significant diplomatic move, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has recently appointed Renu Yadav, IFS, as Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) at the Embassy of India in Syria, underscoring New Delhi’s continued commitment to strengthening ties with the Middle East region.
Her latest assignment in Damascus comes at a crucial time when India is deepening its outreach to the region amid shifting geopolitical currents and reconstruction efforts in Syria. India had earlier reached out to Syria’s provisional government in late July by sending its first official delegation to Damascus in order to understand the interim government’s plans and priorities. Suresh Kumar, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, had met with senior Syrian officials, including Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
Yadav, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience across West Asia and North Africa (WANA), has emerged as one of the most visible faces of India’s diplomatic engagement in the Middle East. Before her posting to Syria, Renu Yadav served as India’s Representative to Palestine, where she played a pivotal role in advancing India’s development cooperation and humanitarian partnerships with the Palestinian Authority. Her tenure there was marked by proactive engagement on education, capacity-building, and cultural diplomacy — reinforcing India’s traditional support for the Palestinian cause.

Earlier in her diplomatic career, Yadav served in Egypt and Bahrain, two strategically important missions that gave her a deep understanding of the Arab world’s political and socio-economic dynamics.
Diplomatic observers note that Yadav’s steady rise reflects India’s growing emphasis on women’s leadership in foreign policy and on leveraging experienced officers to navigate the complex Middle Eastern landscape. Her new posting in Syria, a country still emerging from years of conflict, is viewed as an opportunity to revitalize India–Syria cooperation and restoration of diplomatic relations.
Syria is currently under the interim leadership of former HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. He was Syria’s de facto leader of the post-revolutionary caretaker government from 8 December 2024 until 29 January 2025, when he was appointed president of Syria at the Syrian Revolution Victory Conference held in the People’s Palace.
With her appointment, Renu Yadav is set to play a key role in projecting India’s diplomatic presence and strategic interests across the Middle East, reinforcing the country’s image as a stable and reliable partner in the region’s reconstruction and peace-building process.
